Someone asked if anyone tried it with a new Android.

Mine works great with the S9 and Pixel 3. Oddly enough, I think the sound in the ES is on par l, if not better than on my other cars. If it's not an audio setting issue, I think you should take it in.

Also checked with my friends Xs, sounds no different .

Yes, all settings the same (all in neutral and no surround on).
18 in my car is well elevated volume, not very loud, but louder than I mostly listen. With me, 12 is loud enough most of the time.
I have no idea how some people here can set their volume to 40 - it would be far too loud in my car!!
I noticed this other post about how USB audio output works on iPhone. The whole thing about digital to analog and then analog to digital conversion doesn’t make sense.
I am certain that the iPhone will not do anything to the signal if putting out via USB. The car will convert it from digital to analog only in that case.
Yes, the comment about additional compression when sending audio via Bluetooth makes sense.

OBLexus - you are right. iPhone sends a digital signal out via USB. The car head unit will convert that digital signal to analog and then amplify it. USB cannot pass an analog signal.

That is showing that you can use the port for your wired headphones, which are analog. It has nothing to do with the digital signal being sent to the car's USB port. Basically, not different than plugging in a USB flash drive. I believe selecting iTunes will add the phones EQ adjustments, if any were made.
