Default NAV system map updates

I'm at my dealer getting my 35000 mile service. I asked if they could up date the map database while I was here. The service writer said he would check on it. I have a 2017 ES-350 and bought in Nov. 2016.

The service writer just let me know the next update is not until Oct. 2019. I know there are some mistakes on the presen database. Is there a way I can check to find out the what the latest map database is?

Is there also a separate update for the system to help improve system performance commands etc? Different than the maps update.

Yes. That's one's a free DIY. Here's the most recent one for cars with Gen8 (7" NAV):

The new Gen8 maps are out - I had my 2015 ES300h updated over the weekend... it had the original 2014 maps on it. The date on the new map is 2018-06-01. Cost was $282 ($212 for the maps and $70 for 1/2 hr. labor).

For $282.00 I'd buy a new Garmin portable with lifetime maps, touchscreen, voice activation, and traffic reports. Outrageous price for a map update...

That much to load a map file onto a msd card and slide it in the slot? Robbery.

It is a blatant ripoff, and I am sure I won't do it, but I have never liked portable GPS's compared to the big built in screen.

Better yet, just use Waze, or google maps and you get always updated maps for free. You just need good phone mount.

They don't use much data. Also most of us don't need the navigation all the time, only when going to new unfamiliar places or on road trips.

Seriously though. Almost $300 for a map update. I wouldnt pay more than $100. That really is a RIP off. Honestly not worth it.

When we got my wife's Kia Sportage we got 3 map updates to be used within 5 years for $99. Download to the SD card and update yourself. Easy Peasy. Why o why Lexus can't (or doesn't want to) make it so easy is beyond me. I probably won't ever update my maps. I have a Garmin with lifetime map updates and voice recognition that I take on long trips.

I'm with you. Take the Garmin along with lifetime FREE updates. Lexus does the same thing with the remote start issue. It's built into the car but disabled BY LEXUS after a year...

Because Lexus does not feel it competes in any way with Kia. sniff, sniff and hip hooray, old chap.
