Right, they call it a Power Splitting Device (PSD). Some magic box that converts power from the engine and electric motor to the wheels. Is there any maintenance around this item? What's a realistic life expectancy of this part?

They have been used in Taxis for years and I have not heard of any issues. Going the distance, 200,000 miles and more.

I wanted to change my transmission fluid as well but the dealer told me its good for 100K! I know its a full synthetic fluid but I think its way to long for it not to be changed.

So I have a question for those of us who are old enough to have owned cars which has differentials in the back live axle. Or people who have owned trucks with a differential at the back. The ES hybrid CVT is similar to that.

How often does one change oil in a differential? I dont think I ever did when I owned a car like that in my college days. If those differentials lasted 100K miles (that is about how long cars lasted back then), then the ES hybrids CVT should last 100K miles too.

You can read my earlier post on the comment from my local Lexus Service Manager. Last week was in getting some routine maintenance done and told him about this thread.Asked him about what does lifetime mean and his reply was forever and not just the original owner. Told me he went to Detroit to where the Lexus transmissions are manufactured for training. He asked the question what is the number one reason the transmission would fail? Their reply was 90% of the failures were due to the wrong transmission fluid being used during a change or to much or to little transmission fluid being used again during a change. This explains why the other Lexus Service Manager in town told be changing it can do more harm than good.

Eh, I wonder what an atf oil analysis would show on fluid at 200k miles that had never been changed. Never seen one.

Overall there appear to be very few transmission failures, but it does happen. And in all of my years of surfing the 5th and 6th gen forums, I don’t think that I’ve ever come across someone who regularly flushes who has had a transmission failure.

At least that they admitted to...

1.2 million miles on original transmission fluid. Owner confirms what my two Lexus Service managers stated about never needs changing. Forward to the 3:20 mark.

How much time does this guy spend behind the wheel? Over 100,000 miles a year. Wow.

Off topic, but little surprised there is not placard on this vehicle (indicating radioactive material).
