Default Oil Capacity

Hey guys, if this topic has been discussed before I apologize, but I don't recall if it has or has not been talked about.. that's oil capacity with a filter change in a 2013 ES 350. I checked the manual last night and it says with a filter change 6.4 quarts of oil would be needed.. I usually try and buy Mobil 1 Synthetic EP when it goes on sale so I had several bottles in the garage.. One was a brand new unopened 5 qt. bottle, the other was a 5qt bottle but only had 2 quarats remaining.. So I drove over to the Lexus dealership for the oil change but they told me they were slammed and couldn't get to it today.. no problem, I head over to a Toyota dealership across town. Tell them I have my own oil and filter on the passenger seat... Got the car back about an hour later and I noticed the tech had put the bottle with some remaining oil in it back in the car. I Look at it and there is still 2 quarts left, meaning he used only the 5 qt bottle... Before I leave the dealership I pop the hood and check the oil... it was right on the money... I see the tech walk by and I ask if they changed the filter also.. he assured me they did and when I said are you sure, he volunteered to go retrieve my old one out of a trash bin but I told him that wasn't necessary.. so the manual says 6.4 quarts, yet my car only took 5 quarts... and it is full.. how can this be.....anyone else ever run across this?

Roland, what are you doing reading the manual!!! Interesting find because I have had a 13 and now a 17 ES and always brought my five quart jug and filter to the Lexus or Toyota dealer for a change. They have never come back and said I need more. Once I asked for the jug back and there was probably a half quart still inside. Our RX450h, I bring in the five quart jug along with a one quart container.

I actually just changed the oil myself for the first time last week. I had been just taking it in and letting the dealer do it. It took almost 30 minutes for it to drain completely. When I added oil back, I stopped at 6qts and started the car and let it run for a few minutes. It seemed in range on the dipstick, but I added the other half qt anyways. I drove it around awhile and checked it again. It still reads in range, just on the high side. Maybe the dealer doesn't let it all drain out before recapping. Or, they take your jug home and add some crappy oil that use on unsuspecting customers.

Note that the oil capacity for the ES350 is not the same as for the ES300h. For the ES350, it is 6.4 quarts (with filter). For the ES300h, I believe it is 4.4 quarts.

I've changed the oil myself in my 2013 since new. The capacity is indeed 6.4 qts. The car has always taken 6 + quarts with a filter replacement. I think that when the oil is changed by a mechanic at the dealer or other facility, they close the reservoir before all of the oil drains because they want to finish. As Mike says, it does take a long time for the reservoir to completely drain.

hey guys thanks for the replies... well I think one of two things happened... either they didn't change the filter or they put the plug back into the pan before it had completely drained... Im not worried that there may be some old oil in there since I change my oil every 5K miles instead of the recommended 10K... I think the next time I'm going to take it to my buddy's tire store and have them change it, making a specific request to let the pan drain til it's completely empty... that way I'll see for sure what it takes.. and I'll bet it's closer to 6.4 quarts... thanks again guys.

When I change my 2013 ES, I put in 7gts. I change oil for a living at my house so when I get a car that has the .4, .8, or whatever, I just round it off. Been doing this since a kid, and never had any problems.

Up here in OC, there are recycle centers that accept all the used oil you want to bring them.

Yeah, by me too. The only limit is it must fit in your trunk, or pickup bed.

I take my used oil to a business that uses it to heat their garage.
