How do you check oil dipstick?
 

This may sound stupid but everytime I check my dipstick, the oil is at least 3 inches above the full mark. Thats a good 1-2 quart over and I know the dealer couldn't possibly overfill it by that much. I'm guessing because the dipstick kinds of bends into the oil pan and it picks up oil residue on the way. I checked it after I left my car sitting over night and still same thing. Is there a trick to getting accurate reading?

Are you wiping it off first and then checking the level?

I can't add anything to Mike's reply. Oil moves around in the reservoir while the engine is running and therefore would be marked at a higher level. This is why you have to remove the stick, wipe it clean, then reinsert it to get an accurate reading. I'm assuming that you already know that the engine must be shut off.

Agreed, could be overfilled. If you wipe the dipstick and check it again, the oil level should be at the top/second mark and not any higher.

I guess no one else has this problem. I checked other lexus v6 forums and some people have checking dipstick problems too. Guess i'll figure something out.

Not sure what else there is to check. It appears they over filled it. I would take it back and show them, so they can take care of it.

Right, if you check the oil level a bunch of times and its registering as high...its high. Its not "the way you're checking it".

If you weren't going to believe what you saw on the dipstick why would you bother to check it? :uh:

constant overfilling is not good for the engine. extra load on the crank /rods bearings depending on how much over could hurt the life.

I'd document it, and take it in.

I have noticed the opposite pattern, the dealer under filling during oil changes.

Guys, keep in mind that most if not all places when adding oil, they will add 7qts; not the 6.5qts. thats why your dipstick reads above the full mark. A half qt. overfill will not harm the engine. I do this all the time and nothing has happened in 40 plus years.

Why do you think that? is the oil level below the lower limit on the dipstick? if the oil level close to the middle point between the 2 limits this is still normal.
