With 1000mi on odometer I drove roundtrip (1270miles) from Atlanta to Delray Beach, Fl. I had 34.8 mpg for the trip computed by gallons used and milage. Driving speeds were about 8 miph over speed limits and the entire trip was freeways. Happy with mpg since I could have driven slower speeds and increased mpg!

I live in Los Angeles, and just finishing my first tank of gas. Mostly stop and go city traffic (70%) and some highway (30%). All in ECO and being conscious of trying to drive "appropriately" for gas mileage, but not fanatic about it. It is impossible to ease out of a stop as slow as you need to in LA, without someone rear-ending you.

I averaged 30.1 MPG per computer. I sincerely hope this improves!

With the wife out of town I put some miles on the 300h this weekend. Average for first two fillups since I started tracking is 37.0. First fillup was 38.2 and second was 35.8. I believe the difference is that weather was colder during second tank and I drove more aggressively in Sport mode on some winding country roads. Also noted there were 5 days between fillups at same station and gas price had increased $.25 per gallon.

Cold kills mileage... but still better when gas price is almost 4 bucks a gallon.

Wasjr - your ES300h mpg has got to be better than your truck or SUV, even in the cold.

You are very right. The MDX is my daily driver and I avg 17-18 mpg. I have had 3 MDXs and this one gets the worst gas mileage of the three. As to the truck, I don't even track the mpg. It has a 6.0 V8 and a 35 gallon tank...but it is very useful and I enjoy driving it..

Based on gas prices here in No. Calif, at $4.00/gal and rising, that would cost $140 to fill up the Silverado. Yikes.

Arty101 - I heard today in our local newss that prices in CA are approaching $5/gal in some areas - ouch! Almost $4 here in South Florida.

Just refilled, my 2nd tank, and averaged just over 44mpg, travelling over 665 miles. - Interestingly, the on-board computer and actual calculated MPG were pretty much identical.

Elliot - So I'm still averaging about 39.5, but the computer is reading about 40.9, which initself, isn't too shabby. I'm watching my instant fuel consumption on the Navi and accelerating up to speed quickly, and coasting/gliding as much as possible.but can't get any greater economy without other drastic hyper milage measures. Any other advice?

I did not invent this, read it somewhere, tried it out and behold, it works!

It's around 40F in the morning here. We know that turning off the AC increases the MPG but who wants to be cold? Not me, not in a $50K car. So, turn off the AC and put the seat heater on. What amazed me is that I stayed nice and warm but also, my MPG improved by 10% on my morning stop and go commute (12 miles). Not a one off. Done this several times and there is a noticeable increase in MPG.

I think the main increase is due to the engine kicking off a lot sooner in the morning.

'coasting/gliding as much as possible" I typically try to get the car into a controlled EV 'coast'. After you reach your cruising speed, release the throttle then very, very lightly/slightly depress the gas pedal (immediately after releasing the gas pedal). This will almost always get the car into EV mode (as long as there is enough battery power) and allow you to stay at or near your cruising speed for long distances IN EV MODE, racking up nice distances at ultra high MPGs. This works best under 45mph and of course you need battery power. I have the tachometer showing rather than the standard hybrid display and it will usually show 0 rpm when in this coast mode.

You still want to coast without depressing the gas pedal whenever possible when approaching a traffic light or stop sign (traffic permitting).

Here on the California Central Coast the gas is about $4.25.

According to USA today (reported today):

"Consumers in some metropolitan areas, such as Southern California, are already paying nearly $5.20 a gallon, up more than 75 cents since December lows."


I guess local taxes also come into play. I am on the 'border' of two counties and there is quite a difference from one to the other.

In No. Calif, we're now at $4.20 at most stations. There are the few that need to gouge the driver and charge over $5.00 a gallon. Those could be franchised or company owned stations. Also gasoline in California is typically more than the rest of the US because of the special blend only manufactured and available in the state. We can't import gas from our neighbors since they don't have the special blend, thank you Special Interest and environmentalists who think we shouldn't drive at all but ride bicycles to work.
