Default 2013 ES 350 Odometer not working

Hi everyone!

I’m new to the forum and a new Lexus owner. I recently purchased a 2013 ES 350. It was a one owner car that was traded into the dealership with about 82,000 miles in June 2025. When I purchased it about a month ago, the odometer read 87,110. So, nothing unusual. The car looks like you would expect something with this low of mileage to look. Rides excellently, so nothing stood out.

What I didn’t notice during the test drive was that the odometer wasn’t changing as I drove. Well, it sort of does - it will go to 87,111, but then go back to 87,110. It just alternates between the two. In addition, the trip odometers will start to register tenths of a mile up until about 0.5 or 0.6, then they reset as well.

Has anyone run into this issue? I tried searching the forum, but didn’t see anything. There are no codes stored in the computer. I’ve read that it could be speed sensors (either wheel or transmission), but the speedometer works perfectly. All the other gauges are working as they should, as well. I’ve also read that it could be a faulty instrument cluster, so I ordered a used one that is on the way (a simple swap…or so I thought, as I’ve recently seen some things saying it has to be professionally programmed after install).

Any suggestions on cause? Am I on the right track to swap that out?

Thanks in advance for your expertise and experience!

Roy

Check all fuses.

I would disconnect 12v battery and reconnect

Thanks for those suggestions. I don't think any fuses are blown, but I'll go through them all. I hadn't thought about removing and reconnecting the battery, but I'll try that, too, when I get home this afternoon.

All the fuses are fine, and I disconnected the positive and negative terminals for over an hour. No change.

The new instrument cluster arrives tomorrow. We’ll see if that helps are creates its own problems!

May have been tampered with. Did it work after you bought it? Did you put around 7K miles on it since the purchase and it worked the whole time? Describe the progression of a problem more thoroughly please.

Any flood damage signs? Any warranty?

It would make sense to be a fauly cluster, or sensor, or a tempered with cluseter/cpu - to roll back the mileage.

Why not take it back to the dealer you bought it from? Odometer issues should be taken seriously.
