Sometimes hear a cranking noise on push start
Sometimes when I have my door open I will hear a cranking noise that sounds like some sort of conveyor belt ? It doesn’t always happen. Any idea what this is ? 08 220k

Can you record it and upload it here?
Might be a whole number of things, does it change when you rev your engine? Do you hear it when you roll your windows down (with your door shut)? Is it louder when the hood is open? |
I’ll try and record it
The best way I can describe it is when I hit the ignition at the end of the test cycle I hear like a chain noise crank. It doesn’t always happen. Maybe the battery doesn’t have enough juice to start it as usual. Which is weird cuz you think it would happen more often. Maybe I’ll goto autozone and have them test the battery. But the car seems fine. It doesn’t sound like a starter or ignition issue

Check your battery. However, with over 200,000 miles, it could be anything! What is your oil level and when was it last changed?
The Idler pullies on the serpentine belt or alternator are possible candidates. |
Good advice
You know what I do hear a slight squeak when I’m near a wall drive thru window so you might be right about the idler pulley. Is that an easy fix ? Wheee should I take it for that ?

I used to park in an underground garage and it is amazing how loud car noises appear in them with the windows open and the sound gets reflected off the walls. It sometimes sounds like the whole car may fall apart before you can leave. Ignore most of those noises. If you can hear it on the street with your windows open and closed then worry.
Any independent shop can work on this Toyota/Lexus 3.5 liter V6 engine. It has been used in a million Toyota & Lexus vehicles for over 10 years. They would probably replace the serpentine belt, the idler pulleys and the automatic belt tension adjuster. You need it diagnosed by them first. Tell them about the noise and let them diagnose the cause. It could be something else. If you need help finding a reputable local shop start with searching on this link to shops recommended by listeners of the old car repair radio talk show Car Talk, then cross check any likely shops on Google or Yelp for more current reviews. https://www.cartalk.com/mechanics-files |
