Shimmy between 40 and 50 MPH
Hi folks,
Recently me 07 ES developed a shimmy when accelerating between 40 and 50. Any thought on what it might be and a possible fix? Thanks |
First, get your tires inspected and balanced. The most likely cause is worn tires that are out of balance, or a weight fell off a wheel, or a tire has become bad and has an internal belt failure, or it hit something that damaged the sidewall. Or one of your wheels is bent from hitting a pothole or something else. It may even be a stuck brake caliper. or a failing motor mount.
A tire shop or good indpendent repair place can handle this better than a dealer for a lot less money and will less chance of them trying to sell you things you don't need. If you get someone that says you need to replace your ball joints, control arms, struts etc, for thousands of dollars, then get a second opinion. |
The tires are new and the brakes look fine. My fear is it's a transmission issue but I really hope I'm wrong. I'm going to look at the motor mount,
Thanks. |
If the shimmy is less pronounced the harder you accelerate, it's most likely a worn out CV shaft. The passenger side shaft tends to wear out first. Being in NH, you likely will have a corroded carrier bearing that may require cutting out the shaft.

Thanks. I'll take a look at that.

How many miles on the car? I also recommend having a trusted shop look at it, less headaches and less wasted time.
