coolant leak
I’m hoping it’s just a radiator hose but I already started watching YouTube videos on replacing the water pump. The mobile version of this website sucks at searching but from what I’ve noticed, does the fifth gen. sometimes have a different water pump? The video I saw replaced the water pump on an 08 es 350 and it was a weird looking, long pump. When I did a search on a computer (on this site) there was a write up for a smaller pump where the timing chain needed to be removed to access the pump. Are not all 5th gen’s created equal? I think this one is Canadian, if that matters..... |
Look up 3.5L 2GR-FE V6 they used the same motor in the 6th generation the 7th generation is also an updated variant of the same motor. Many Toyota have the same motor as well so you should be able to find allot of info at The Toyota forums as well. |
Well, after further investigation it appeared to be an old radiator hose. However, after purchasing a new work light, it looks like it might be the water pump. I’m not too sure as I can’t see it too well but it does look like the pump may be stained pink. I though it was the hose because it has some splatter. Has anyone attempted this job lately? |

A leaking water pump is usually at the weep hole, located on bottom of the pump. If the radiator hose is leaking, the leak could be flowing onto the water pump, making it look like the water pump is leaking.
I, also, have replaced the water pump, in our 07 ES350. It took about six hours. There is a lot of stuff to move out of the way and you lift the engine on the passenger side about four inches. I followed this utube video: |
I saw that same vid. My upper and lower radiator hoses just came in so I plan on replacing those as soon as I have time. I still can’t get a real good look at the WP from up top but I plan I’m removing the bottom covers when I do the hoses. Maybe I can get a better look from the bottom. Do people normally re-use the same coolant that comes out? |
Yes, if it's at the start of it's life. Coolant is changed at 100K and every 50K thereafter. If it is past it's half life, it would not be a bad idea to use fresh antifreeze to replace what came out. If I recall, correctly you will not be able to get a good view of the weep hole from below. A thin mirror from the top will give a better view. Possibly from the passenger side wheel well and with the belt removed.

Dang! I’ll definitly be removing the wheel and all covers to try to get a better look. I filled the reservoir Tuesday and it is bone dry today. I checked the res before I filled it so it didn’t look cracked but maybe I’ll check it out again. I didn’t leak when I filled it with water. I need some time off to take some time with this car. |
It’s been over 2 months and I still haven’t had a chance to do the water pump. From my experience, once they start leaking, they soon stop working completely. Maybe it is just a hose?

You have to put some pressure in the system and check where the leak is coming from. I bet it is your WP.
