Question Uh-oh...problem?

Hi All, I have an '07 ES350 with 105k on the clock. Was sitting, eating a little lunch and checking email today. Noticed that it was getting warm in the car (75 degrees in NH today) even though the AC was on "auto". I messed around with the AC and only got warm air. Then I noticed that the temp gauge was near red line. No check engine lights or AC messages on the nav. I immediately turned the car off and let it cool for a couple of hours. Started her up and got good AC and temp gauge seemed to be normal. I'm pretty sure the radiator fan DIDN'T kick on when it got really warm. I checked under the car and saw no leaks...and the coolant reservoir looked ok. I've had the car 5 years and have never seen this before. Based on what I've explained, seems like I should focus on the radiator fan (or relays??). Any other ideas on what I should look for? Thanks, in advance.

Firstly, check that the coolant level in the rad is actually right up to the rad fill port (check with the coolant cool). It has been seen before on this forum where the coolant expansion tank still has some coolant in it but the cooling system (at least the rad) was found to have little or no coolant in it, so check the radiator for coolant. The AC probably (or should have) tripped off when the coolant temp got really hot. The cooling fans should have been on with the AC being on (as you stated) but they should also run due to the overtemp but you may have shutdown the engine prior to the coolant temp getting hot enough.
