I bought a 2007 ES350 just as they came out in late April 2006. There was a lot of discussion on regular vs. premium. At the time, every Toyota product with the same engine (Camry, Avalon, Venza, Sienna, Highlander) were recommending regular and showing the 268 hp vs. the ES350 at 275 on premium. You can't go wrong with either grade. Strictly personal choice IMO.

I’ve been using 87 ever since i filled it up the first time. Has worked great the whole time. In fact, it has never been back to the dealer except for the lame floor mat recall right after we bought it. Most dependable vehicle we’ve ever owned.

Around me the difference between the two grades is .70 to .90 per gallon so the differenceis significant. In any case, use whichever you want in the ES350 and you'll be fine.

Not an ES, I know, but I commute between Milwaukee and O'Hare near Chicago everyday (158 miles round trip) and I've been using regular for 2 years with no noticeable differences. Yes, I'm just cruising along at 70 mph and not doing a lot of heavy accelerating, but the car runs very well on regular and I've had no issues in almost 70,000 miles of commuting. I'm just shy of 181,000 miles now and shooting for 300K...
I agree with LexBob. The cost difference adds up quickly. I spend on average 350.00 a month on gas, which could easily be 450.00 if I was burning Premium all the time, and I don't think the car would even notice...

Yeah, with my lengthy commute, it would cost an extra $60 a month using premium. If I drove a turbo that required it I’d spring fir it. But it’s well established here that premium isn’t really required contrary to what Lexus originally recommended. And in all of my years here and other forums for the ES I’ve never seen or heard about a problem stemming from not using premium fuel.
Bonus: I know exactly how much horsepower I gain for using premium: a whopping 4!

Premium means wasted money.....do that math! I’ve owned my vehicle for going on nine years now and never had a problem or had a knock! It’s just money down the drain caused by the kool aide Lexus was serving to owners. Obviously they ran out and common sense took over.

In yester-years engine I would say so but in today's engines with knock sensors and engine management systems this is not an issue. Do a little reading up on how these various functions work and what differences the various fuels make. These engines are run all over the world where octane rating change significantly yet they adapt to them.
