Sanity Check would you do this?
I have a 2012 ES350 in pristine condition, 37K miles.
The color is gold, which I like, but am not crazy about.
The local dealer has a 2011 ES with 56K miles on it. Pristine. No NAV (mine does) but nicely done car. The car is white with parchment interior. I love white cars and have regretted not buying that color.
Should I swap cars with him, even up>
Thoughts?
Thank you.

No way i would do the downgrade with much higher miles, and you said you LIKE the gold color so it is not like you really really hate it. If anything i would look for a same or newer one.

When I was looking for my next used car in 2011, I never considered Lexus, until I saw an ad for this Ruby Red beauty. A quick test drive in snowy Feb conditions sealed the deal/. I still fall in love with the car every time I walk up to it!!

Wouldn't even think about it. Color is a deal breaker for me - there is usually only one color I am interested in - and I would never buy anything else. And never go backward - mileage, options etc. Now that you have a car you kind of like stay with it a while longer and then trade up not backward.

Color selection is personal and should be considered at the time of purchase regardless of the deal. But if you want to go backwards then it's your choice. Personally , white , black , silver/gray don't even come into my radar. Then again the gold wouldn't either.

If you were to trade even up, lets look at what the Dealer gets, and what you get.
Dealer gets a newer model car, with almost 20K miles less on the clock, and a nav.
You get the colour you want, a one year older car, 20K miles more on the clock, and no nav.
This doesn't look like an "even" trade for you, so my opinion is, don't do it.

Have you found out if you have to pay taxes on the transaction? I wouldn't do it either. For one thing, even though it has low miles, you don't know the history of the car. However, this is your decision.

I think the dealer would love this deal. Have you talked to them about it. My bet is they are having a difficult time getting rid of the 2011 . It sounds like a fleet type loaner as it is a base model car. He would stand to make around $5K by selling your car. You would lose around $3-4K by trading down. Then again if you owe nothing on your car it would most likely only cost you for plates and maybe tax. Also I would think the dealer would buy your car outright and then sell you the used car. Good luck on your decision.
