Premium fuel or lower / Octane requirements (merged threads)

Being that the lexus engine "requires" premium and is rated at 272 horsepower versus the 268 that the toyota engine has, I'd guess that it would only give you 4 extra horsepower.
I think that lexus required premium fuel for the extra 4 horsepower to set it apart from the camry. But as an owner, I really wish that they would just say that regular is ok for our models.

Regular works perfectly fine in my es350. Given that there are many who report that there are no problems with regular I would suspect that there are other factors involved in the reports of those experiencing problems.
As for an increase in mpg at higher octane it simply isn't worth the cost.

Probably I would hear it on premium too.

Why premium gas? What difference in lexus 2gr-fe
Toyota popped this engine into many cars
-camry
-sienna
-RAV4
-Avalon
-rx350
why do the Lexus variants take premium gas only?
do we have different compression ratio or heads from Toyota versions? What's the deal.

You can put 87 and you'll notice no difference.

The ECU will change the timing.

The general trend in the industry is to require premium gas for luxury brands. Some of it has to do with getting higher performance numbers and also they know that people buying luxury cars usually do not mind paying extra for gas.
In 2012 ES350 was downgraded to premium, perhaps they also tweaked engine running, nobody knows. Its possible that horsepower was overstated and they had to scale it back.

living at a higher elevtion and were i am fuel grades are different then they are on the east coast or down south from when i grew up with 87 being the low regular grade
now i am in utah and 85 is the low grade regular fuel. i use 85 in my ES350 2007 model year for over 70,000 miles of driving and never have any problems.
i get great fuel mpg and great power from the car no issue.
once every 5,000 miles ill put a bottle of Chevron Techron in my tank and fill it up with premium fuel higher grade fuel and thats it
usualy do that just before a oil change
