Default Squeaking Noise

So last week a squeaking noise from the front started when applying the brakes. No brainer, the pads need replacing. However, I noticed that a very similar noise can be heard when turning the car at low speed without applying the brakes. At first I thought maybe a caliper was stuck but wouldn't I hear the noise all the time then?

You hear the metal pad thing that scratches the rotor and makes that noise when the pads are worn. You hear it when you turn the steering wheel because the caliper moves because it's connected to the brake fluid hose.

Thanks, For some reason I thought the wear indicator was in the pad itself.

It is in the pad itself.

Then I don't understand. Don't the wheel, rotor and caliper all move together? I actually took it to my mechanic this morning. They said the wear indicator was out of position. The pads still had 60-70% of their material left. Unfortunately I didn't have a lot of time to go into the problem with them.

It clips onto the pad (held on with spring tension) and somehow got out of position, making the warning noise. Luckily, you have an honest mechanic!
