Default Changing my Oil Filter after 47,000 miles

Hello All,

I have a 2008 es350 with 97k I bought it a few years back used with around 50k and the only issue I’ve had have been tires changes and an alignment. Other than that it’s been trouble free. I've changed my own oil every 4k with the cheap stuff from Walmart about 15.99 for 5 quarts its super easy to change. That said, I've never changed my oil filter in any of the cars that I've owned. I've owned several cars through the years and all have made it over 250 k with no engine issues and I’ve never changed the oil filter. I’m getting about 27-28 mpg average and the car runs smooth as silk. Now I’m forced to change my filter, the O-ring on the filter housing has started to leak and I have change it out. I’ll post some pics of the filter later today or tomorrow. I just wanted to show what an oil filter with 47k looks like.

47000 on an oil filter? That's crazy.

I don't want to argue whether the oil filter is necessary. I just want to share my experience of what an oil filter looks like that have been changed in years but has had fresh oil every few months. I thought y'all might enjoy.

I do find it interesting but it's a heck of a way to void your warranty.

I want to cry for your poor 3.5L. Though I'm definitely curious to see how the filter looks.

How much time should one estimate to do this job? A lot of stuff under to take off, or it pretty straight forward? I've watched some videos and have NEVER had an oil change done (i've always done my own), but just got an 07 ES350, this will be my first ES350 change.

Looks can be very deceiving when inspecting a used oil filter. This is because as the paper gets plugged, less oil flows through the paper until the paper gets plugged solid. Consequently all the dirty oil starts to flow through the bypass valve and eventually all the oil and residual dirt flows through the bypass valve. The motor then starts to suffer depending on how long you wait to change the oil. A plugged filter with 5000K will not look much different than one with 40,000K as the additional dirt has no reason to stick to the filter. A short oil change interval will help somewhat but dirt will soon start to flow still bypassing the filter and start causing more wear. Poor economics of scale regardless. Especially if you can afford to buy a Lexus..

Bypass the dirt right into the engine....not smart.

I generally count on reading about one stupid person a day. My quota for today is now fulfilled.

Agreed, looks can be deceiving. I'm more interested in the pleats and if they remained glued together for the entire 40k miles.

The engine runs very smooth and has lots of power. I'm not advocating against oil filters this has been my experience with oil filters. I had a 97 f150 and I changed the filter twice and it had 300k with no issues. I sold it cause I needed a more efficient car. Other than speculation does anyone know of a engine dyeing because of not changing oil filters but changing the oil it self.
