3. There's a U-shaped set spring retainer that has kind of curled circle ends. This holds the bulb assembly in place by locking into notches on either side at roughly 11:00 & 1:00 on the housing. Pinch those two curled ends towards each other and pull them out and down to clear the notches and swing the retainer downward. This will release the bulb in the very center of the unit.

4. Pull the bulb out by it's base. It's about 3" long and comes straight out. Don't touch the glass if you intend to reuse the bulb.

5. The Toyota HID bulb is part # 90981-20024 (for my 2007 ES350).

6. Holding the new bulb by the base and without touching the glass, push the bulb back into the hole. There are notches & tabs in the base and mount that must match. Just rotate the bulb until it catches.

7. Reset the retaining spring by swinging it up and pushing it in while pinching the curled ends a bit. Release the ends when they lock into the metal notches on the housing. Make sure the retainer is secure before proceeding.

8. Reattach the metal socket fitting by pushing in at and turning clockwise 45 degrees from roughly a 10:00 to a 12:00 position.

9. Reattach the plastic cover by turning it clockwise.

That's all there is to it.

I just replaced the passenger side bulb. Ordered it from Amazon, and added a pack of 10 engine cover fasteners as many of mine were basically almost useless in holding. Total about $60.

I found it useful to unclip the coolant overflow tank hose and move it out of the way to give a little better hand access.

Also had trouble reinstalling the plastic cover (step 9) until I noticed the tines that hold it in place are not located symmetrical at 12, 3, 6, 9. One is at about 10, So futzed around trying to get it inserted so I could turn it until I noticed that.

Easy job and sure beats the $217 bulb, $9 labor I paid a dealer for the driver side about a year ago.

Thanks dreyfus

omg for those that think this is easy you must have small hands. I didn't know the silver cover piece came off. I had fought and fought trying to get the light to lock in. I didn't know that part comes off because when I removed it I somehow pulled it off still installed. I was about to remove the bumper cover and pull the darn headlight out but now I will give it one more shot using the steps above...

Quick question on the bulb replacement. If the headlight (drivers side also) is flickering and turns off at times, should you change out the balance also? Or just replacing the bulb is enough? I want to change mines to the 6000k pure white ones, so would I have to change the balance for them either way?

Which one did you do, the stock (4300k) one? Or the 6000k one? And if you did the 6000k one, did it look nice and white?

It's best to replace them in pairs, no matter what color temperature you're using, as timegoes on they "wear" and get a little dimmer, so new one and old one won't match.
As far as color temperature:: 4300k, 5000k, 6000k, 8000k -- what I've read says the 4300-5000k bulbs are best for night vision, the others may look cooler to you, but you won't be able to see as far at night. There are some demonstrations on YouTube.

Mine just went out (passenger side) and the dealer replaced it. $350. Ouch. I asked about changing them in pairs, but they said to leave it alone. This is the same dealer that doesn't believe in ATF changes (they spew me that "lifetime" BS). Anyway, these bulbs seem to be the D2S type (theretrofitsource.com), when/if the other goes or I see a change in color, I'm getting aftermarket HID bulbs.

Will bet you went to the Dealer on Route 100, not that it matters. Thus far, in last 50+ years of driving, every dealer but one, no matter whether Lexus, Ford, Chrysler, GM or BMW deserves to be called a $tealer. Phillips bulbs, D4S if I remember correctly, run around $50 each on Amaz*n. Here is a youtube on replacing the bulbs on an Avalon, virtually identical to the es350:
You do the math.
