Default Repair or Replace Rocker Molding?

I recently had a little mishap involving driving my ES350 onto low ramps so I could change the oil/filter easier, resulting in a crack in the plastic rocker molding. (see photo) I've been to two body shops, the first one, an independent which I know does good work and guarantees his work, recommended repair. Total cost; 377.00. The second estimate from a Lexus body shop recommended replacement of the part because of possible flexing and "popping out" of the repaired area. Total cost; 579.00. Has anyone ever heard of a repaired plastic rocker molding or bumper that didn't hold up?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Of course I'm leaning toward the cheaper repair. Thank you JWE

How about another option?. Get the independent shop to replace the rocker. I would see if this is possible and what the price would be.

Hi jkayca,

The independent shop priced it both ways and to my surprise they wanted 655.00 to replace the rocker verses 579.00 at the Lexus shop. Plus, they didn't seem worried about the durability of the repair as Lexus mentioned.

I'd be worried about the look and finish of the repair. Honestly, if I were to fix it I would get the rocker replaced. My two cents.
