Lexus ES 350 oil change

I'm looking for Special Service Tool (SST) to remove the oil filter housing (ES 350 with 12,000 miles). I have used walmart stuff (cap style wrench). But for some reason it is on so tight. Where can I buy one?

Lexusfreak 02-08-08 10:38 AM

I think one of the supporting vendors here sells them. Might want to try a search.....I think that has been asked not long ago.

Try one of the vendors like he said. Have you had your oil changed before, or is this the first one?

LOL--apparently I'm not the only one who's had trouble removing the housing w/ the Walmart cap wrench. ;)

ng123ray 02-12-08 12:48 PM

just use a standard socket wrench..... tighten up the drain plug... then torque it free so the whole unit comes out.. then use a bench clamp to hold the cap while you take out the drain plug...

You can get one through your lexus dealer. I can find the part number on mine tomorrow. I'm not sure on the price though.

try your local/chain auto part stores, they have oil filter sockets, autozone has them next to the oil filters

I've tried them all--well, at least the ones that can be had at your neighborhood Autozone/Kragens/Pep Boys--it's either because none of them work or else the filter housing is super-torqued on there.

The one that fits the ES350 housing also fits on an 07 corolla filter, if your having slippage, try a towel between the 2, also I found a longer extension allows for better leverage then a smaller extension

Which oil and filter

My dealer states to use Penzoil Synthetic 5W-30 oil for my next oil change at 10K. What oil filter should I use? I plan on purchasing that Service Tool in a week or so. I have used to many wrenches that don't work on other cars and I am done with it. I'll just buy the thing and be done with it. I haven't changed the oil yet in this car but am not wanting to pay the $40 my dealer is wanting to charge. Not to mention the $25 for the tire rotation. Any feedback on the filter is appreciated.

garsarno 02-22-08 05:44 AM

My garage guy just gets the Toyota oil filter "insides" and replaces it.

The oil change is easy. You don't even have to lift the car.

Toyota/Lexus filters are the only way to go, quality-wise. I always buy mine from the local Toyota dealer. The part # is 04152-YZZA1.

I've purchased the air filters (cabin & engine) from there too.

$14 oil change/filter at my local Toyota dealer (with coupon)

No mess and out in 30 mins.

RXGS 02-23-08 10:02 AM

^^^^ good deal

<VENOM> 02-23-08 10:39 AM

does anyone else sell the paper filter element, cause I just pick them up at Toyota for half the price of Lexus

Thanks for the towel suggestion--I'll try that next time! FWIW--just using a longer extension didn't do me any good...so perhaps I'll try both combinations if doing just the towel trick doesn't cut it.

WIX 57047 is listed as a replacement filter although I have not used one, I just get the filters from Toyota.

I got mine at lexus-parts.com(sewell lexus) and use the club lexus discount code CL911M. The filters came out to ~$5 a piece and i bought a box of 10.

What coupon are you referring to?

Bingo!

My local Lexus dealer wants $75 for an oil change. The Toyota dealer one block away on the same street will do it for $30. Of course, I don't get the free croissants and car wash.

When you factor in the cost of 5+ quarts of oil from Wal-Mart, the $4 filter from the Toyota dealer, the 40 minutes of grunting, fumbling, and cleaning up the mess, and the 40 minutes driving to the local oil recycling facility, it's simply not worth changing the oil yourself, IMHO.

Something tells me that none of these dealers (Toyota or Lexus) bother replacing the two O-Rings in the filter assembly, though.

What baffles me: Why does Lexus require an appointment and several hours (or an entire day) to do an oil change, whereas Toyota can do it in 30 minutes? I never could understand being told I had to leave the car all day and get a loaner just for an oil change. Perhaps they're just trying to give me my 75 dollars-worth?

Most Toyota dealers mail monthly coupons to their customers. Once you bring your car in for service, you'll be forever on their mailing list and will get the coupons.

MD350 03-02-08 08:37 AM

Exactly! We owned two Siennas previously and are on their mailing list.

So just 5-30W oil and the above part# for the oil filter? That's all we need?

It's basically the same exact parts as the Camry right? My BIL is helping me change the oil and he needs to know what parts to get. He's a Toyota mechanic so he'd be picking up parts with Toyota part #s.

Yup. Remember, you'll need nearly six and a half quarts of oil instead of the usual five.

Muchas gracias!

What's the regular price of ES350 oil change at the dealer?

kboyj 08-01-08 08:29 AM

Next time wrap a rubber band around the filter element and then use the filter wrench or cap.
Unless you have a lot of time on your hand, you should consider having the dealer change your oil. Although I have a lift and air tools, I like to have the receipts that will later ensure the new owners of my vehicle that selective routine maintenance has been done to ensure the quality of their purchase.

Varies depending on your location. You're better off calling and asking than relying on what people post here. It'll be faster too!

Yup.

Just for kicks, mine quoted $65. I've seen higher and lower reported in other threads. You'll only know how much yours costs by calling them.

LexTund 08-15-08 04:40 AM

You can use the Assenmacher TOY-640 Filter wrench. You can find them on-line for about $25. It's superior to the dealer SST. I have one and it is very well made.

That's exactly why I'm looking for an independent shop/mechanic around my area. It's nice to have some good coffee and get a loaner, but it's so much of a hassle for a simple oil change.
