My mentality is that I don't generally buy a new car that often, but when I do I like to buy something nice that I know I will be comfortable driving for a while.
This trans issue even with the replacement does not give me a warm, fuzzy feeling inside about the car. Do not seriously think I will be holding onto this car beyound the 4 yrs 48k warranty.

Makes me yearn for my 1987 Old Cutlass 307 v9 with 4 speed automatic transmission. Other than the common eating of intake manifold gaskets (due to steel block, aluminum intake manifold and metal pan gasket), the car ran like a champ for 8 1/2 years 155,000 miles.

Now that your tranny is dead, there is no reason for them to lie to you. See if you can get some facts for all of us. We do appriciate it!

It would be pretty funny, though, if they told you that your transmission is "learning" and sent you home....

Good luck!
MD,

LOL@ learning...In NJ's case, his decided to take a long nap after tiring out from all the learning it had been doing

That's just not funny MD.

But glad you can have a sense of humor about it.

Keep us informed NJLEXES. As MD stated, you are the first to report this on CL. And your previous experience is the similar to mine, except for the rough downshifts. Haven't experienced that. I do have the 3 - 4 shift flares though. It's strange you did not. Really??

MD350

That was why I was glad on some level that I had the dash lights come on to "back up my story".
I was really worried that they were not going to be able to replicate the problem and this was going to be an ongoing dance with them.

My dealer here is generally pretty good about things.
Between my in-laws and myself, we have bought 6 cars from them
over the past years.... ALL ES models.

Myself 2002,2007

My in-laws 1999,2002,2005, and now just bought an 07 ES350 about 1 1/2 months ago.
He is also not happy to hear my news, but as you can see they get rid of their cars every 3 yrs or so.
He also doesn't like the way the headlights light the road.
Not far enough (does have the HID with AFS)

The only reason I can joke about it is because that is what they told me and so many others. Bob, you too, right? It ain't my punch line, it is Lexus's. I'll give them the credit.

Yes, for sure, even Nj managed the horse comment among what I am sure is very unpleasant for him. And knowing they are stuffing the same learning challenged type of transmission back in his car.

Not to beat a dead horse but the ES transmission has serious issues, one needs humor, even dark (horse) humor to deal with it.

Today, to borrow 2thfxer's expression if somebody ever tells me again a transmission that is slipping or acting oddly is learning I'll pimp slap them.

With the holiday weekend, this is slowing the process down a bit.
Dealer only opened on Monday for 1/2 day & closed Tuesday.

The trans was ordered yesterday and will be in on Wed.
They might have it done Wed or Thursday at the latest.
I asked him if they would do the reflash and he said they were going to do that too.

My service loaner is an ES350 also - build 9/06 with about 12000 miles on it and the trans seems to drive fine.

I will definitely let all of you know how it turns out.

He'd like a Mercedes (or maybe a SUV with HID) and would HATE a BMW.

NJLEXES

Identical issue with mine a few weeks a ago, all the same dash lights. Trans just quit on me in the middle of intersection. Great advertising for Lexus blocking traffic in the middle of 4 lane highway.
Have had new trans @ 3 weeks, so far so good. Build date 07/06. Good luck !

typical flare issues, mostly on cold days. 2 TSB's. Trans actually failed one week after 2nd TSB. 17000 miles

kilo,

Didn't you already have a transmission replaced before this happened, so is this the third one the car will have in it, original, 1st replacement and now this one you now have? Or, did you mean several TSB of reflash etc. and no other replacement but this one?

I have a feeling we will be hearing more and more of this as some of these cars get some miles on them.

Maybe we should start a poll:

My tranny has no issues.
My tranny has the typical 3 - 4 flare
My tranny flares all over the place.
My tranny FAILED.
