Can the ML utilize the extended range of the above formats, or can it only play these with no dynamic range benefit? Or, will it not play them at all?
I was curious of the same things and did a bit of experimenting. I have played DVD's and DVD-A on my ML system. It is my understanding it will play Super Audio as well although I personally have not tried that format. Unless you have modified your system, you will only hear the sound while moving, no video or special features. You cannot even see the track list on DVD-A's. I don't claim to be an audiophile, but here are my thoughts. The biggest advantage is playback in full surround sound. It does add a bit of depth to the sound and the DVD-A I purchased does come across a bit cleaner as well relative to the CD version of the same music. There certainly was no, "Wow what a difference" factor. Seeing a movie or a music video on the system while parked is fun initially and fun to impress your friends, but really not practical. I have found DVD-A's limited in selection and more costly. For the difference (again, IMHO) I will not seek out the format. However, if you find the music of your liking on the shelf in CD and DVD-A formats at close to the same price, then go for the DVD-A.
