Default starter recs

A day at the beach ended with a tow job because the starter gave out. The car is an '04 with 154,000 miles. I see that it has a weathered Carquest rebuilt one. (Side question: That means that the OE starter gave out probably well before 147,000 when I got the car; has anyone lost an OE starter [Toy/Lex] at such low mileage?)

I checked the relay, rapped on the solenoid, put it in N...nothing. I also made sure the security light stopped flashing with the key inserted.

Luckily, the job looks cheap and easy, assuming it is the starter.

Does anyone have a recommendation on which one to get?

I purchased a remanufatured Denso 29,000 miles and 2 1/2 years ago from CarID. Works great. The original went 218,000 miles. I think if you look around you'll find that Denso reman is the way to go. Pretty easy to install on my 2003.ES.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Wouldn't recommend anything other than Denso. I believe rockauto sells re-manufactured Denso starters for a good price

Well darn it, the starter works when I bench test it, so I have yet another thing (endless) I have to deal with on this car. Question though: Would it profit to have Autozone test it, or do they do exactly what I did, to just wire it up to 12V and call it good if it spins? I don't suppose they do any further testing, such as under load or check for internal resistance?

Have you also checked the battery (load tested) and the cables are clean and tight?

Turns out that the solenoid signal wire had come unseated because the click mechanism was broken. I must have bumped it loose 2 years ago when I was deep in there to replace the T'stat, and it simply worked its way out slowly over time.

Did your car turning over at all? I'm asking because I am having issues getting mine to start. My battery is working and it turns over just won't start. Trying to go through threads to find pointers.

No nothing at all. It made a relay clicking sound only.

Well surprise, surprise, another fail and another tow so I was wrong about it being the solenoid trigger wire. Looks like Denso remans are 100 plus $60 core, not bad. Prepaid core return from CARiD if I'm reading it correctly. Also considering NAPA new, $229.

On it now is a reman Tough1one.

Too bad for me it's not the OEM Denso because that would have been likely a cheap and easy fix with a new contact kit:

Here's a link to a Denso starter at Rockauto for a 2003 ES. About the same as Denso prices you quoted.

Search this forum for reviews on NAPA parts before you decide which way to go.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I have an 02 Camry XLE. Original starter lasted 139,400 miles. Replaced with an O’Reilly remanufactured because I couldn’t wait to order a Denso from Rockauto.

O’Reilly starter lasted just under 35,000 miles. Replaced it this last summer with a Denso reman.

It’s Denso or no go for me from now on. Alternator, coil packs, starter, etc.

Went with the Denso (CARiD); priced about the same as RA. Much to my surprise it's reman'ed in the US, so big bonus points. I know it's firing the parts cannon at an issue, but I wanted to eliminate the starter as the problem and it's too cold here for lengthy diagnostic sessions. Very easy installation and so far so good.
