Fix or Sell
2x oxygen sensors = 100$ + 1hr to install both
charcoal canister = 200$ + 2hrs of work
breaks = 50$ pads + 100$ rotors + 1.5hr of work
struts = 150$ + 3hrs of work
PS pump =100$ + 2hrs of work
Total Parts = 700$ + ~10hrs of work.
Stay away from the dealer. Especially with 16 y.o. car.

Hi everyone, I have a 1997 ES with 223,000 miles on it, I recently took it to the Toyota dealership to have the check engine light checked and the car looked over for the California smog test.
They found it needs 2 new oxygen sensors, and charcoal canister. I also mentioned that the front suspension was making noise and it turns out it needs new struts all around, brakes and has a small power steering leak on the rack.
They wanted around $6000 for everything to be fixed, and that's way more then the car is worth by a lot. I really do not want to get rid of this car, I have access too all the tools to fix myself, but is it worth it?

reviewers seem to be satisfied, probably similar to stock. they sell these in high volume.
to the OP: i'd look around and find a shop that would take your parts and you just pay for the labor. It is hard to find in my area but they are out there.
You may have to drive outside the city to more rural area to find a shop - ask around may be someone can recommend one, use YELP, in more rural areas mechanics are more willing to work with you, they need all business they can get. In the city, they already have plenty of customers as it is.
so 700$ for parts + 10hr labor at 60$/hr or so you are looking at <1500$ for everything vs 6K+ from the dealer. 75% OFF stealer ship prices it does require you to do some leg work and calling around. Who said it was going to be easy?
Good luck!

I'm interested in how well they perform. I nearly paid that much for just one of my struts.
