Anyone ever replace the hood release cable? I thought it was the lock assembly that was broken because my hood wouldn't "pop" up when you pulled the release lever from inside the car. When I went to install the new lock assembly, I noticed that a small plastic piece of the cable was broken and came loose from it's mount causing the hood not "pop" anymore.
I've already looked and the cable is like $20 but just wanted to know how involved to get at and replace.
Thanks.

Wanted to revive this post from the dead. My hood latch on my 2000 ES300 is broke. I have the replacement Dorman cable. Anyone ever do this job? I currently have it rigged with a pull wire tied to the front grille so I can open the hood.
Looks like I need to remove the plastic from inside the driver side wheel well and route the cable through the firewall. Does anyone have the diagram for installing this? Which way do I need to pull the cable? Do I need to go from inside the car and pull it through or from the engine bay into the fire wall? I'd like to tape up the new cable to the end of the old one and just pull it through if possible but I am not sure if there are any size restrictions in the openings.
Hoping someone can help me out.

You will need to pull the fender liner and possibly part of the airbox/resonator. Isn't super hard just tedious and need to be a bit of a contortionist. I feed the cable from the fender liner into the firewall then work back the other way but it doesn't really matter what direction you go.

Thanks for getting back. Trying to avoid pulling the fender liner, etc. We already cut the old cable and have it coiled up under the hood. I am wondering if I can tape the end of the new cable securely to cut end of the old, grease it up some, then pull the old through the interior bringing along the new cable with it. I imagine some wiggling will be needed through any rubber grommets they have in the firewall. Worst that will happen is it won't work and then I'll do it the way you suggest. I saw that some of the guys on the GS threads were able to get it to work doing that and just wondered if anyone else here tried it on an ES. I'll give it a go and report back.Originally Posted by Lexus2000
