On my 94, what type of freon does the a/c take r-134a or r-12? Thanks

Freon is R12. The cleaner refrigerant is R134a. Your A/C compressor labels should say what type of refrigerant is used for your specific ES. They outlawed the use of R12 aka Freon on cars in the early 90s. I believe the 94 was using the R134a....double check it in your owners manual.

I owned a '94 ES so that's why I said with assurance that R134a was the proper refrigerant! I think that Lexus changed from R12 to R134a starting with the '94 models.

Look on your A/C compressor, it should say whether you have R-134A. If you dont see the sticker, you might want to take it to a shop and verify which you have. It wasnt until year model 1996 that ALL cars and trucks had to have R-134A. R-134A started coming around in 1994 or so. If you have R-12 you can still have it recharged, but you have to find someone that has some old cans left that are willing to part with them or take it to someone that has a license to buy it. Converting an old R-12 to R-134A takes a professional with the right equipment, and is well worth it. If I recall correctly (not a real A/C expert), but the recharge hose for the R-134A will not fit on the R-12 low side port.

Do you mean the part where you said Lexus didnt change to R-134A till the '04 year model? If so then I do believe you are wrong since it has been illegal for manufacturers to use R-12 since the end of the 1995 year model. Also you might have a 94 model car that was made in 94 and his model could have been made in 93. Manufacturers are well known for changing things during a year model. A '97 Accord for example has three different brands of calipers for one year model. I'm just saying to look and verifty.
