94 es300 speedometer odometer doesn’t work
Speedometer and odometer doesn’t move. So far replaced speed sensor. Just wondering if there will be more vss that I need to look for? No check engine on. Thanks for the help in advance.

the one that goes to the transmission,with green-red-red wires. There is any more sensors? I was thinking speed sensor via ABS wire. Its either wiring from the speed sensor to the combo meter or... A worn out drive gear where the speed sensor gear meshes up in the trans. Try this to eliminate a wiring issue to the speedo head. --- Take the speed sensor gear out of the trans. (connector hooked up) --- Engine running --- Spin the speed sensor gear and see if there is any movement in the speedo head. If you cant spin it fast enough to read, see if you can somehow hook an electric drill to it. Maybe use the old sensor if you think its still good. I honestly dont know if this will work but worth a try. |

I did the test suggested and was cleaver idea. I made a plug with paper towel and put it at the hole were the speed sensor goes and turned engine on, I had somebody watching the needle and I put the speedometer (the one for a trip) and I rolled the en of the speedometer fron mi wrist or the elbow and the needle moves and the odometer also star counting so I know thanks to you that my new speedometer works. Put it back on the trans, tested and nothing moved. You mention abs sensors where are located? |

That just means that the gear in the trans that meshes with the speed sensor is bad. Those gears i believe are made of some nylon or hard plastic that wears out. Only was to fix is to tear the trans apart and replace that gear. Thats the only way you’ll get your speedometer working. |
Before I tore into the transmission I'd do the following. Read error codes. Read the ABS codes. Then I'd suggest that you check all the wheel speed sensors. Review this link for other causes of the speedometer not working. https://www.clublexus.com/forums/es-...mil-p0500.html Make sure to review the youtube video in the link, Everyone thinks the only reason the speedometer stops working is because of the speed sensor in the transmission. This is not the case. The problem could be a broken wire from one of the wheel speed sensors or even a bad wheel speed sensor. Get an OPDII reader that has live data and check the data provided by each wheel speed sensor.

Speedometer gets its only input from the speed sensor in the transmission from this system. Trans speed sensor ---> Combo meter--->ECU This system is thru 98. 99 models and up uses the ABS speed sensor to transmit speed to the combo. ( i just helped diag one of the members here not long ago, he had a P0500 code and that was his flow chart) Ended up being a bad combo meter. For 99ES and up ABS speed sensor --->ABS actuator ECU--->Combo meter--->ECU OP also tested by spinning the gear on the sensor while the engine is running. --- Confirmed that the speedo started working with out spinning any wheels. So your theory of needing the ABS sensor to to work the speedometer just doesn't work that way in this system. The link on the youtube you shared on that post also uses 99 and up systems. OP again has a 94 and uses a different system. Honestly, i wouldnt tear the trans out either to get my speedometer back. I'l use an app on my phone to get GPS speed or use an old GARMIN GPS. |

Thanks for your reply. Definitely I have now the od light blinking and the check engine as well. So I’m going to bring the car to the auto part store and see what codes are showing and going from there. |
In the meantime is the vehicle drivable? For The way that you explained looks to me like you work with transmissions. Base on your experience is this job can be done by a person following step by step instructions to take down the transmission? And for this fix is any diy? Can’t find info online for this fix. Thanks |
