1998 Lexus 300ES - Speedo Stopped Working
Good morning all ES 300 owners,
I have now replaced the VSS, the transmission speed sensor and both knock sensors on my 98 ES 300, and my speedo is still not working. Codes still show for P0500 and the knock sensors.
Do I now need to replace the Dash unit?
Please let me have your constructive comments.
Thank you.

The speedo head itself could be defective do you have a help yourself wrecker near you? On the knock sensors did you use genuine parts?

The speedometer inside the cluster, sometimes the tiny motor that drives the needle goes bad. If you can get a used cluster swap it in temporarily to see what happens. Do this with the battery disconnected to avoid tripping an airbag code.

We repair these every day. The MPH needle stops moving and the odometer screen goes blank. They fail together.
