Default Looking for a code reader for 2000 Lexus ES300.

I am looking for a code reader/scanner that actually works with my 2000 Lexus ES300. There are many out there on-line, that claim to work with all Asian vehicles from 1996 and on but some people have complained they don't fit their Asian vehicles. I'd like to hear from your own experience (2000 ES300 owners) that which one actually works. I would hate to buy online and would have to return because it doesn't fit.

thank you.

The newer cheap elm327 units will have the protocol you need. I had problems with ones a few years ago and my Acura/Isuzu protocols from that vintage. But newer ones and the protocol Toyota uses are no problem. If you have an iOS phone, get a wifi one and not BT. If android, either will work with your phone as the software platform.

Thank you, Oro. Wifi capable sounds nice but what if the car breaks down on the road where there's no wifi?

you don’t need to be near WIFi. The wifi that Oro was referring to is just a protocol used between the Elm unit and your phone. The Elm unit generates and transmitts its own wifi signal, hence as long as your phone is relatively close (10ft or so) to the Elm unit it will work

thanks for your explanattion, PFB. That is more like a wireless connection than wifi connection that we have come to be familiar with.

My mechanic Son uses my Autel AutoLink AL329 and he says it does what it’s supposed to. You need a Windows PC to register and update out of the box, then you’re OK. About $35...

Compatible with domestic, Asian and European vehicles, 1996 and newer
Retrieves generic (P0, P2, P3 and U0), manufacturer-specific (P1, P3 and U1) and pending codes
Reads and displays I/M monitor (Emissions) status
Views Freeze Frame Data
Retrieves vehicle identification information (VIN, CALID and CVN)
Clears codes, resets monitors and turns off malfunction indicator light (MIL)”

Easy plug-in and scan operation

uh, “wireless” is the “wi” in “wifi.” It is a wifi signal your phone will recognize and then you connect to it. The data will be exchanged via the wifi signal. You wll see the elm unit as a broadcasting wifi network in your network list.

More silly questions. When connecting to a smart phone, will the car have to be FULLY started? If the car fails to start, will the ignition just be on "ON" position to read codes? And if I'll leave it plugged in all the times, what about power consumption? Will it drain my battery? I am totally new to these devices and I am researching....Thanks so much
