Default Painted winter rims graphite color

Just wanted to share what I did with my old ES300 rims on my 98 Lexus. I wanted a different look instead of the silver oem look, so I did graphite.

What I used-
  • 2 cans of Dupli-Color Graphite ($6.99/per can at mostly any auto parts store)
  • 1 can of Rust-Oleum primer ($3.96 at Walmart)
  • 1 can of Rust-Oleum 2x Clear coat semi-gloss ($3.86 at Walmart)
  • sandpaper 150, 400, 1000 grit that I had laying around
  • 5 medium box from Home Depot ($1.39/per box)
  • Tac cloths
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • 2 sets of index cards from the dollar store
  • painters tape
  • Heat gun
  1. 3 coats of primer
  2. 5 coats of graphite
  3. 3 coats of clear
I didn't even have to wet sand at the end very smooth feel after the clear coat.

Great use of index cards! Never would have thought of that.

Great job, thanks for sharing. Agree the index card use is very clever and a real timesaver!

How much time was required between coats? Lastly, how are they holding up going down the road?

WildES300 I wait about 10-15 minutes between coats give or take. I also used a heat gun as well that speeded up the process because it was around 30F here in IL when I did it.

After I did the rims I only had them on for like over a month before the head gasket started to go and sold the car. In the summer I rocked mint IS300 wheels that makes the car look great.

**UPDATE**

Hey WildES300 (if you see this), seems like the rims are holding up pretty well. I spotted my car this weekend and the rims still look good after 1.5 years.

Ohhh that looks good, Ill probably do the same. I recently had some is250 wheels powdercoated for my es summer wheels and plan on using the stock ones for snow tires this winter.
