Just wondering if an easy DIY fix or need to take into the shop. Any suggestions on what to look for to diagnose the issue?

I'm guessing it would be one of 4 things, the blower motor or the Blower Motor Linear Controller or Blower Resistor or wiring issue. When I had an issue like yours, the blower motor was going bad. When I checked the blower with an alternate 12 volt power source it worked fine. I only figured out what was wrong (after replacing the controller and resistor) by swapping the blower out with a known good blower. An oem blower is expensive ($215 shipped). Universal blowers are inexpensive but you'll have to splice some wires.
Edit: It doesn't sound like it's the resistor or controller, usually when they fail the blower runs only on low or high speed. I'd bet your blower motor is going bad.
