Default Transmission update

So my car was pulled off the highway to my house roughly (5 miles). Tranny is slipping, no reverse or drive, neutral works but loud grinding when putting back to park. CV axle also popped out somehow. Lost about a quart and a half of transmission fluid. What might be the problem? My dad thinks the torque converter either popped out of place or is bad. Tranny I bought has 193K miles on it. Help!

First you need to find out how this happened.

the CV axle is held in place with with a retaining stop ring,

It would take quite a bit of force for that to pop out. When the lower arms and front leg (hub/strut) are free. Around 80-100 ft pounds.

For it to be forced out from internal forces (in the box), the final drive must have failed. I think if you were to pull that gearbox apart you would find the final drive has failed badly, the spider gears in the differential will be loose / damaged, and the center shaft will be in the bottom of the casing.

Of course I'm guessing, .. but it's an educated one, .. that gearbox will be FUBAR on the inside. The Torque converter will probably be fine, but everything will be so containinated with metal shards it will be stuffed.

If you repair this car, get another radiator too, it has the transmission oil cooler in it, and that will also be contaminated with metal. If you don't (if I'm even right), it would release those into the oil when everythings re-filled, and send them into the new g/box.
