1996 Lexus Es300 Ignition Module
Anyone know of a work around or modification for a '96 ES300 ignition control module.
From what I have seen, this is the only model with a 10 or so pin system versus the 6 pin for all other models.
Difference in price is astounding. $375 vs $50. It may be time to sell car for parts.
Anyone have an idea?

Thanks for related...nothing here
It seems one has to know VIN to get correct ICM
We have a new motor installed many yrs ago.
We are going through Lexus to find when engine block was manufactured. Lexus are not quick finding the answer.
They did not keep records mating engine with a VIN. Crazy

Ignition control module? What part exactly are you looking to replace? The ignition coils are controlled by the engine computer what do you mean by 6 or 10 pin I must be missing something there.

Above is a photo
One must mate the correct ICM to the engine.
Engine was replaced, but obviously the ICM was wrong because there is a history of coils going bad. At least 4 to date
I would have thought it would be easy for Lexus to give me the approximate date the engine came off the production line and I can find the correct ICM
They can match up the part to a VIN but can't match up an engine to a VIN.
I am dealing direct with 'customer satisfaction' rep Kim at HQ.
Ut took her 3 days to get back to me with the wrong answer because she had the question wrong. THREE DAYS...are u kidding me?

You can determine the year(s) the engine/harness etc. came from going by the ECU part number.

Really?
OK. But what if the ECU hasn't changed as much as the igniter?
Remember this is a replacement engine and the igniter had also come from the breakers yard.
But probably was not mated to the replacement engine but came from a different parts car.
Lets be fair not many would have considered the igniter being year specific. I wonder if this is the same for ECU.
I'll check to see if that is a breakers yard part. They are usually marked.
Where would I find the year of manufacture of the engine on the ECU.

For anyone interested. Here is a decent description of what the igniter does and why it needs to work

BTW. No auto parts store here in Houston has the adapter to check the ten pin igniter.
Dealer can check it only when in the car. (of course)

I really don't know what you're getting at. You put in a replacement engine but you have not said what year it came out of, what engine harness you used, what ECU you used etc. so what exactly are you asking here? If you are trying to mix and match parts from different years well that's unknown territory you will have to make it up as you go.

Yep. A replacement motor is in car. Whoever did it did not think to find the right igniter match for that engine.
They simply went to junkyard and estimated age of motor and picked the igniter.
Well, over time, coils were getting burned out.
No one thought to check igniter because simple replacement of coils each time seemed to fix the problem.
Now there is evidence based on what car is doing, that the igniter is finished.
Some igniters are far more expensive than others.
I was asking if anyone knew of a way to work around the issue.
However, subsequent to my initial post I found that the igniter is very important, although I'm not sure as to why one does a different job than another.
My problem is that to ascertain what igniter part # I need, I must first know the year and month when the engine was built. I only have the number stamped on the block.
The ECM is probably the original to the car and the previous engine. Hence it isn't or hasn't caused any problems so far.

The year of the engine itself doesn't matter unless it is 1999+ what matters is the engine harness. Was that changed or is it original to the car you are not saying. 1994 used 6 ignition coils sometime in 1995 (could be for the 1996 model only not sure) this was replaced with the waste spark system so 3 coils and 3 plug wires. The igniter parts numbers are:
89621-33020 (08/1993 - 07/1995)
89621-35011 (08/1995 - 07/1996)
The first number does not change up to the 2nd.
Punching both those part numbers into Ebay found plenty of listings.

Oh
I think I get it.
There should be a different number of wires for each part #?
Thanks for the tip.
This might lead us to a solution.
I'll post asap.
