Speedometer and Tach issues

My 1996 ES300 the tachometer operates about 90% of the time and the speedometer about 60%. When they are not operating I speed up to about 70mph and they work. All the backlighting on the panels operate.Sometimes banging on top of the dashboard repairs the problem however I am concerned the dash may crack. Any easy fix?
