rattling noise from belts or water pump
I have es300 1996, yesterday it shuddered and start making rattling noise while I was on highway. I pulled the car and engine stooped and after that when I try to crank it crank but no start or if start it die down. I towed the car and at home i tried starting again and it sound like it is coming from alternator I took the alternator to oriel y and it was fine along with battery. so I put it back and left the serpentine belt off and cranked again on battery, same ratling noise coming on close inspection it looks like either coming from crankshaft pulley or timing belt cover (may be water pump). since Pulley IS NOT WOBBLING SO i DON'T THINK bearing or pulley is the problem.
can anyone help here is the link to you tube video |
Get a long screwdriver and press the tip to various areas where you think the sound is coming from while pressing the handle to your ear - poor man's stethoscope. Maybe will help pinpoint it.

+1 use long screw driver or get a stethescope at Harbor Freight

Telescoping magnet tool works well or listening, that rattling is probably the idler bearing about to blow up. Given the loudness, the sound is going to travel though everything plus you need to pull the upper cover at least to inspect.

In the few moments the camera is not jumping around, the engine sure is. I have never seen a 1mz-fe shake that much. It seems most all motor mounts must be broken, which may have contributed to the problem. |
so if idler pulley making that noise then why don't I see pulley wobbling?
|
Because it would not necessarily make the timing belt "wobble."

Need to remove the upper cover for sure.

OP, keep us posted.

Lexus2000 is talking about the TB idler, which you can't see with the covers on. Not any idler for the alternator which may be what you are thinking. There is no idler on the alternator (or vane/ps pump). You can google for a diagram. |
