These are pretty cool.

Looks to be fairly safe, minimal passenger compartment disturbance.

Good side impact, nice airbag.

And the good ol 5mph bump.

Which leads me to this, nothing to do with lexus other than the ability to obliterate one. I just find this amazing.

Does anyone out there have any crash videos of es300s, es330s or just general insanity like the volvo video?

The ES is a safe car in most kinds of collisions. However, it fails terribly in the small overlap test. The small overlap represents 25% of each side, so 50% of the frontal area. The A Pillar and front subframe are not strong enough. The side airbag also fails to deploy. :/

Personally, I hate the idiotic parking brake which is designed to impale your shin in a major accident, being literally aimed at your leg when not set. Such an idiotic design and that's very rare with Toyota. I have thought about using an electric saw to shorten it and replace the footpad lower in the footwell. Wished they used a simple handbrake lever.

More details and photos here: http://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/veh...oor-sedan/2012
^ Check out the photos of the aftermath, too much intrusion.

This is the 12-15 model.
The door hinge pillar is torn completely apart and the wheel is forced into the cabin. Not good performance.

Finally fixed for the 2016 year:

I'm glad the IIHS is out there to do this kind of testing, the NHTSA sure is mostly worthless.

Wow, that 2012 is terrible, at least the 2016 looks survivable. I am with you on the parking brake lever, I hate it even more now that I know it is a hazard.

Just had a look at the IIHS website, great source of info and I will definitely use it as a resource in the future when purchasing cars. The damage done in the small overlap test is horrifying!

I was actually shocked when I got in my ES330 and saw the parking brake lever down there on the floor and not somewhere on the center console. Guess marketing told them "Americans" wouldn't go for the parking brake like all those other cars made abroad.....make it like just like an American car in the 60's.....

I'm seriously thinking of sawing down the parking brake. I wouldn't do it on a 40 thousand dollar car but my car is probably worth 7 thousand dollars and it would be an improvement anyway.

Also thinking of adding some high density foam (which takes a decent amount of force to fully compress) into the front lower area behind the foglamps, which is basically a big open space, as well as some thin layers on the lower and lower front door where one's head would strike in this kind of accident.

Please note the small overlap test was something that has started being tested in recent years (starting in 2012) and many cars suffered the same fate as seen in the ES. This isn't limited to just the ES, the 2012 ES is the same design as the 2007.

I imagine the 2013 would have done a bit better but not significantly so because designers/engineers had already had the car ready to go before this test was introduced. However, there is no video that I can find to back this up.

The 2012 Acura TL and Volvo S60 were the only two of 11 luxury vehicles tested that passed the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) new "small-overlap" frontal crash test with a "good" rating.

Well, I start a car crash thread and have one the next day while taking my wife's car in for service. How's that for serendipity? At least it is minor and no one was hurt, just two cars side kissing bumpers. Metal bumper wins.

Well, here is my rental from the accident, 2015 Jeep Wrangler, complete opposite from the ES300. It's crude, rough riding and noisy but it really makes you smile when you drive it for some reason. It would be a lot of fun to have as a toy but daily driving it would not be my thing at all.

Well, you're right, unlike the 5ES, the 6ES made it onto their "pick list"... So I guess it did do significantly better.

Although this is a hard test to pass for any CAR. Unibody + 65mph + one rail/tower = disaster no matter which car it is... IMO. And I've seen A LOT of makes/models at the salvage auctions suffer the same fate - usually the Lexus' are the safest from my gatherings in what [I can ASSUME] are similar accidents, ie. front end, rear end, T-bone.

01LEXPL, how have any Volvos that you have seen at salvage auctions fared?

Chocolate, I never thought about the brake lever until I drove my car today, you are 100% correct, that thing looks dangerous to your shin. So, I was looking at electric brake actuators today. I saw a kit but it was $500, then I started looking up liner actuators and they were around $50 and up. I think it would be possible to diy a solution for this problem for not too much money, I'll have to have a closer look at the mechanism.

Great idea, looking forward to what you come up with.

We'll see, 500 dollars is way too much in my opinion. Now every time I'm in my car I'm going to think of it as the shin skewer it is. Front drivers need a handbrake in my opinion to be able to brake balance(e brake turns, etc). Now I'm torn between electronic or handbrake.

Thought about it last night and electronic is the way to go I guess, there isn't a way to integrate a handbrake without it looking like crap. I was contemplating this last night as I did this to the rental Jeep. My wife hates me.
