DIY: Black Suede Headliner and Pillars
Wrapped my car's interior pillars and headliner in black suede. Turned out pretty good, it feels like a much different car now driving around.
Here's how it was done:
Headliner DIY:
Pillar DIY:
Here's a few photos of the process:
Gray Headliner before:
Gray pillars before:
Removing the back seat:
Remove the hand holder:
Remove the seat buckle:
Remove these door sills:
Remove the bottom side panel:
Remove the pillar around the rear windows (differs for 4 door car):
Remove the dome light:
Pop off the A-pillar:
Remove the trim around the sunroof:
Remove the sunroof console:
Remove sunvisors:
Remove the oh-shi* handles:
Headliner should be pretty loose by now. Its held in by 3 clips at the top back:
Just pop it downward, the headliner will fall down and can then be removed from the car:
For those servicing the sunroof, there's only 4 10mm bolts and nuts on each side (left, front, right) and the whole sunroof assembly will drop down, with the motor and glass:
Since I didn't want to remove the sunroof, I had to remove the stopper for the sunshade, which in this case is screwed in from the top, and then slide back the sunshade:
Headliner removed from the car:
The material I used was a suede-like material with a soft touch on one side. I got it from my local fabric store. Laid it out and rough cut it to size:
I used a combination of 3M spray adhesive and Lepage contact cement around the edges to bond the fabric to the headliner. If your headliner is drooping, I recommend removing that fabric substrate and wrapping the suede on the foam hardboard:
Sprayed around the edges:

Use some contact cement around the edges:
Then fold the material around the edges:
Cutout the sunroof and fold it over, trimming the access:
Here’s the completed headliner, before installing into the car:
Here’s the completed suede wrapped pillars:
All the black plastic trims, including the dome light, sunroof console, trim around sunroof, clips and handles were painted satin black to match the suede:
Reinstallation
Slide the wrapped sunshade back into the sunroof tracks and reinstall the stopper. The suede added some thickness so the shade is much harder to slide around now:
Once you install the headliner in the car and pop in the three clips at the back, the front can be tacked on with the sunvisor clip:
Reinstall the A-pillars:
Reinstall the dome light:
Reinstall the B and C pillars:
And then these side panels. Make sure all clips are in place before popping it in:
Install the hook clips:
And the hand holder:
And the rear seat:
The sunvisors I sourced from a Solara convertible with a black interior:
Finally hookup the sunvisor console. I swapped an ES300 console with the sunglass holder into mine since I don’t use the garage door opener. The black convertible sunvisors have a garage door opener on them anyway.
Completed install:
