Default Charcoal Cabin Filter Question 2003 ES300

Greetings:

I've owned my 2003 ES300 for 6 weeks now and I'm learning more each day. I bought a new cabair filter on Ebay. One side of the filter is charcoal treated. The filter is not marked with flow direction of up/down and the old filter was not charcoal treated. Can someone tell me if the charcoal side goes up or down?

Thanks,

Vic

Usually, somewhere on the edge there is an arrow indicating air flow.

Failing that, I believe the charcoal is to windward. Whether that is up or down I don't recall from the last time I had mine out; I think it is up.

Thanks Oro,

There is nothing on the filter indicating the direction of flow. I'll send an email to the seller and see if he knows.

Although it really doesn't make much difference, normally the regular filter portion should be the first layer that comes in contact with the air flow, and the charcoal layer should be the last.

Thanks Phil your post got me into gear to find the answer and you are correct. The charcoal is the last layer the air should pass through. The first layers will catch the leaves and particulate matter and the charcoal will adsorb (not absorb but adsorb) the smoke and odors in the same way that powdered activated charcoal will adsorb ingested poisons in the human digestive tract. So the answer to the question is definitely that the charcoal side of the cabin filter faces down in the 2003 ES300.

So, let me get this straight. If an aftermarket filter for the 2003 ES 300 has an arrow on the side it should be pointing down? So, that means that the squirrel cage blower UNDER the filter is pulling air from above for cabin distribution?
