Default Where to get ABS ECU?

Hi Folks,

My 97 ES 300 recently started showing the ABS light with a flashing Trac Off light. It does this maybe 90% of the time now.

I took it to a mechanic and he said the ABS ECU was dead. Such a thing new costs a little over a $1000. Not so sure that is a good investment given the age of the car and that ABS is a nice to have rather then a requirement.

I haven't yet double checked his work. I need to dig into these forums a bit. Apparently the ABS ECU has it's own error codes and there is a way to check that.

Assuming that it is the ABS ECU, do you folks know somewhere I can get one that will be a more reasonable price?

Thanks!

The problem usually is caused by one of the wheel speed Senors. That mechanic, or someone else capable of retrieving ABS codes should do it, and determine what the trouble code is.

Until than, everything else is just guess work leading to useless repairs and parts replacements for no reason.

Listen to Phil, he knows what he's talking about. I would highly recommend that you read my ABS experience in another thread titled Backyard Mechanics (do a forum search). It goes into a lot of ABS details and explains how to read and fix the codes.
