Default Key shell broke with metal still in ignition. Cant remove key, cant start the car...

I have a 2004 ES330... recently I just dealt with my key shell breaking off when I went to turn the car off at work.

The shell busted and the metal part stayed in the ignition. When i went to turn the key all the way left to pull it from the ignition it stays locked. Okay so I tried turning the stearing wheel in case it locked. Still no luck. Okay so I said screw it, I'll drive home. I went to turn the car on, power came on just fine, went to start the car it doesnt even turn over.

I've never had engine issues with the ES330, its been the best car I've ever owned. I'm assuming the chip in the key fob is the issue here and theres some sort of security thing im running into.

Is it typical for a Lexus to do this? I just want the damn key out of the ignition so i can get a new one.

Has anyone else dealt with this?

A locksmith, or if you're a member than AAA are you best bets. The locksmith can probably remove the remains of the key without breaking anything.

Hopefully you have another key.

I think the chip is in the key fob, so put that close to the ignition cylinder to start the car. Also, you may be able to get the rest of the key out with some needle nose pliers. Good luck.

It has to get a signal from the key before the engine will start, place the spare key next to the key cylinder and the car should start, My 2006 has a card in the owners manual to use in case the battery in the key FOB dies .
