Default 1999 p0301, p0302, p0303, p0305, p1305, p0172, p0420, p0300

1999 Lexus ES300
Here is the story of my poor Lexus.
About 2 months ago I was getting p0300, p0302, p0304, p0306. Car was still running fine, just a little jerky. Did some research, bought the Oil Control Valve, fixed the problem.

About 1 month ago i get the code P0420
Car running just fine, no problems.

Now I am P0300, p0301, p0302. Car was idling rough, running a little bad.

The next day p0303, p0305, p0172, p1305 show up. Car is running awful. Can not accelerate at all, if petal is to the floor it speeds up, until it switches gears then goes really slow again. Lots of shaking when in idle. Stopped driving the car.

Have been doing a lot of research but I am kind of stumped now.

I read that the p1305 is related to p0302, changing the ignition coil should fix the problem, I bought all 6, spark plugs still look new, but if this doesnt fix the problem I'll replace the spark plugs too. I bought the car about 10k miles ago, everything seemed fine. I should be getting the parts tomorrow. I know bank1 is a pain in the rear to get to, so hopefully it won't take me too long. I was hoping to get some advice on what else the problem could be just in case changing the ignition coils does not fix the problem.

I have a code reader which can also do waveforms of the banks and their sensors. If this info would be of any help just let me know which bank, which sensor and i'll go do it. Thanks for the help.

Use a small dab of dielectric grease on the spark plug terminals to avoid micro-arcing.

I found this really interesting/useful write up on how to do waveform tests on O2 sensors. Going to do this tomorrow to see if any of my sensors have failed.

I read a post somewhere on these forums (didn't bookmark the post but copied the text for notes) that suggested a sensor could be the problem of almost all coil's misfiring (which is my case). So I am going to check this too, hope to get the ignition coils and spark plugs replaced tomorrow, hope others will find this info useful as I have found other useful information by doing lots of google searching. Here is the post I copied.
Hey tderrick, I have a 99 es300 and had the exact same situation. Hear me out on this. I also had misfires on almost all cylinders, check engine light was on, almost every mechanic I went to told me I need a tune up or coils or plugs changed or catalyst converter changed etc etc. I was so frustrated because I could not find from anybody what the exact problem was. But to my surprise, the problem was the oxygen sensors. I replaced all three of my oxygen sensors and the car was good and still is good. But you will not need to change all three sensors. It probably is one of them. You will need to go to a mechanic and tell him to perform the diagnostic to find out which sensor needs to be changed. I found out that I needed to replace my oxygen sensors by an electronically modulated diagnostic which checks the car performance in frequency and waves. This was performed by a highly professional technician. I would suggest to get this done and you should be good. Also by the way, before my problem was resolved, my car ate gas like it was free.

Another update:
I decided to swap ignition coil 2 and 4. Cleared all fault codes, drove the car for 30 minutes and here is what I got.
Car is running much much better. Now instead of p0301, p0302, im getting p0300, p0303, p0304, guessing just that one ignition coil was bad. I also put my car in 2nd gear and it drove exactly how it was suppose to, this was very exciting. (With the p0302 2nd gear would not work at all)
It looks like p0302 is causing p0301 (and eventually the rest) just like p0304 is causing p0303.

I'm glad that p1305 showed up because it pointed me to p0302 which lead me to this.

Still idling rough. Parts should be here any minute, going to replace that one ignition coil and hopefully it fixes the problem.

Alright replacing the one ignition coil has seemed to fix the car. Now i have 5 spare ignition coils lol.

The coils on the 1998 and earlier models fire two cylinders each and start failing at around 100,000 miles. I don't think the 1999 and later models individual coils last any longer than that. Your scanner sounds like a professional model. They usually have a feature called "special test, or mode 6 data" that will give you information on component health ie, within spec, or not. The problem with trying to use the mode six data is that it is in hexadecimal form on certain scanners, but other scanners convert the data for you. Also the components ID in mode 6 is not alway identifiable unless you have access to the manufacturers mode 6 specific details, but you might look into that with your scanner as well. The ignition control module might also be having issues, but do check all the electrical grounds in case you have a loose wire causing trouble. Since you have the coils already, you might want to do a tune-up with new spark plugs, and coils first and go from there and keep the old coils as spares.
