Warning light problem on instrument cluster
 

I have a 1992 es-300. The rear light failure warning light on the instrument cluster (panel) goes on, and stays on when I put the car in gear (auto trans.). All the rear lights work, including the high mount stop light, which i replaced. Anyone know how I can solve this problem. Thanks.

Check your white backup tail lights. One or both of them may be dead, or on the way out. Check your turn signals as well- both front and back. You're basically looking at some sort of bulb being burned out. Worst case scenario- you spend $50 or so, and replace every single outside bulb on the car. Not the most economical approach, but if you can't figure it out, and the warning light bugs you enough- this may be a good approach to take. Besides, you wouldn't have to worry about any exterior lights burning out for a very, very long time.

I just had the same problem over the weekend. At the first glance, I thought all the light bulbs were working, and could not see anything wrong. I opened the cover encasing the rear light, and pulled all the bulbs out in the open. I found a small bulb at the corner on driver's side was out. Because our car has so many bulbs, it was hard to tell when this small one was burnt. I replaced the bulb ($1.99 CAN) and the warning light went away.

Hey - I just had this problem occur myself. The warning light went on, and I replaced the bulb that was out (tail light). Its not the brake light either, just the regular parking light / tail light. Now that i've replaced the bulb, the warning light isnt going away. Its driving my absolutely nuts. I've gone outside at night and looked all around the car for ANY types of bulbs that might be out and none are. Any suggestions? Its a 97 ES

This warning system is sensitive to the bulb wattage installed.

This means the replacement bulb must be the exact same type number as listed in the owners manual. Because the bulb fits the socket, does not mean it is the correct wattage needed for the alert system to reset.

Swifty, thanks for the thread direction. Tammy, thanks for that specific input. I think that in fact may be the issue. I bought some generic AutoZone looking bulbs that look and fit right. I'll look into it again and make sure I get all wattage n what not exactly the same.
