ABS light coming on

Light comes on once every couple of days. Front brakes are new. Back brakes are not. Is this a sign of back brake pads needing replacement?

This is not a sign of brake wear, but rather a sign of an ABS issue. Most likely cause is a defective or dirty wheel speed sensor. To determine which wheel, you'll need to read the check engine code with a scanner capable of reading ABS trouble codes.

By the way, this could also happen if not all of your tires are the same size ,

I did have a spare tire on for a couple days. Hopefully that's it. Thank you !

What year is your ES? I could possibly help you read the codes with a paperclip.

With a paper clip? It's a 2000

Here is a quick video to explain it

Definitely perform the WSS test by jumping Ts with E1 and going for a drive. The computer will check all four wheels and let you know if there is a problem.

To enter the special WSS test mode, turn off the ignition. Leave the short pin in the ABS check connector and use a jumper wire to connect terminals Ts and E1. Engage the parking brake and start the engine. If the system is in the special diagnostic mode, the ABS light will flash at a rate of four times per second.

Drive the vehicle straight ahead at a speed above 50 mph. The ABS light will stop blinking as soon as you exceed 28 mph, then blink once when you hit 50 mph. As soon as you’ve seen the blinks, the test is complete and you can stop the vehicle.

To retrieve the wheel speed sensor codes, use the same diagnostic procedure that you would use to read the normal ABS codes. Remove the short pin from the ABS check connector and jump Tc to E1. If a problem was detected in any of the wheel speed sensor circuits, you’ll find one or more of the following codes:
You can also flip through my ABS thread, if you're interested. It has a picture of all the ABS code definitions.

Hasn't come back on since I got the new tires installed. Thanks

Yeah it should work for all Toyota/Lexus vehicles with that diagnostic port. Of course follow the guide at your own risk, as I found the instructions in my 1997 ES300 Repair Manual.
