Default Damper Shaft Nut Removal

Can the damper shaft nut be removed & reinstalled while the vehicle is on the ground and without having to remove the whole strut assembly?.. Why I ask is because the nut IMO was Torqued a little over SPEC rating. I will be replacing nut with a new one to correct this potential problem!! Thank you

There is a lot of spring pressure on the top mount. I can't guarantee that the strut will not move while missing its nut. Over torquing is better than not being tight enough. What's the actual issue?

It should be no problem to remove and replace the nut, the weight of the car hold everything together, so don't jack it up with the nut off.

I too am wondering how you made this determination, if you did not put the nut on you wouldn't know what the torque is. Breaking torque to loosen a nut is not the same as the torque that the nut was fastened with. Sounds like you are inventing a problem where there is none at all.

Thank you folks for your replies... the problem was is when my mechanic put them on the NUT It was actually flush with the strut piston threads thinking to myself I didn't think there was enough torque on them. So I tightened it but I presume I went passed 36 Ft-lbs.

That's fine, forget about it. You're overthinking the torque requirements.

You really are focused on that nut. I suspect that there has to be more to the story from what you related so far.

If there really is nothing else, than as others have said, just forget about it. If there is something else than what is it?

I also noticed when the nuts were tightened the steering wheel has become a lot tighter when turning..

There aren't any symptoms of the damper nut being overtightened, If you haven't broken the shaft or stripped the threads, you are fine. The nut clamps the strut mount to a step on the strut shaft. It won't affect steering feel to crank that nut down.

You are totally inventing problems where they don't exist. Let it go! Save all the worry for when you have an actual problem.
