I apparently need to get CV boots and controller arms replaced on an ancient es300.

The local shop has given me a quote to swap out the entire front axle with a new one -- apparently it will have CV boots included. They say it's cheaper to replace the whole axle than work on CV-boots. They've given me a quote for new axle and controller arms.

Can I assume that a new (not reconditioned) axle provided by the shop will be of as good quality as the original? Or is it worth keeping my current original axle and have the dealership replace just the CV boots?

The local shop is cheaper than the dealership but if I can expect to see a difference in parts quality, I will bite the bullet.

Any thoughts?

i have changed my cv axles after seeing one boot ripped and squirting grease makin a mess. so i decided to change boots, but after hours of research, its better to change the whole axle with grease already come with it inside the boots. 50 bucks for each axle and the hard part is putting the hub assembly back and stuff like that in my opinion. do the arms same time as the axle if you decide to do it yourself....i can imagine the labor so high becuse this activity took me around 6 hours.

well choose local cuz they ll be cheaper as always? ha let me know what you did.

image below is my DIY cv axles, ripped boot, and inside of whatever the CV attaches to...so much grease, haha.

I would recommend an axle replacement as well. It's very simple if you're an intermediate at car repairs.

Thanks for your thougts. Sounds like it's a better idea to replace the entire axle than just the CV boots. But my choice is to keep the original Lexus axle (and add boots) versus getting a new after-market axle.

Would you still go with an aftermarket axle? Same with controller arms (are aftermarket parts ok)?

well i got aftermarket CV axle and since near 15K on it and seems fine. got a alignment after that and no problem, I do look under few times a month to check for anything wrong. nothing yet. sorry for MONTHS late reply ha.
