Need Help Pricing a Used Car: 2002 Lexus ES300
Hi guys, I'm in need of help / adivce. The SO needs a new daily. We found this 2002 ES300 at a dealer. It has 65,000 miles on it and they were asking $11,900. Its a one owner car. They told me they would take $10,500. KBB has it priced at $13,500 but Edmunds has it for $9,600. What do y'all think is a good and fair price? What are some common issues on this model? Anything that I should look for? Thank you

Damn thats cleaannn. Common issue ive only ran into was the catalytic converters go out often. it sucks changing them. But 10,500 is not bad. It would be a great deal if you can get it for $10,000.

Could easily get $12,500 to 13,000.
I could see 10K if it was much higher mileage. Hold out for a buyer, that paint is very unique. Women love it.
Don't go less. The interior is near mint--Even though it doesn't have the optional packages.

IMHO if you can get it for 10K, that would be fair. Good maintenance history??

Just picked up a 2002 without a scratch with factory Navi and factory HID, Mark Levinson, ...all options for $11K flat - 65K miles also
Just as clean as this one...black on black - but no scratches on bumper
I'd pay $10K for it...And there are scratch damage on the front bumper..

never bought a car from dealer, i avoid unnecessary mark up. I paid for my '02 in as good condition A LOT less 3 years ago, dealer serviced, all records. At the time i looked at 2-3 cars both thousands less with all records.
I buy my cars only from original owners with complete maintenance history - otherwise you are playing a lottery. 10K is a lot of money for a 11 year old car IMO. Add to that tax and ~2K for any surprises in the first year and you are looking at closer to 13-15K car.
Did you run carfax on it?
The biggest issue with this year is that some cars have funny shifting transmissions. Do a thorough test drive.
As far as age/repairs go : you could be looking at radiator / starter / TIMING BELT/pump/ TIRES/ Breaks - calipers/pads and rotors. Check those out, should help you price it better. See whats on autotrader from owners directly. Be patient, its your hard earned money.
Also, gas prices will get over 5$/Gallon sooner than later so i would be looking at something more fuel efficient. This 6cyllinder/210HP engine gets under 20mpg in the winter in traffic.

I did look on AutoTrader. This is the best deal from both dealer and private seller. There are tons of ES300/ES330 in my area with around 90k to 140k and the private sellers are asking $9.5k to $11k.
Dealers are also showing ES with 75k-150k ranging in $8.5k to $12k.
This is the lowest mileage ES in my price range. I don't care for the color but the SO doesn't mind.

If everything looks good get your best price and pull the trigger. If you are handy with a wrench, save yourself some money and follow the great DIY on this forum. Things like filters, brakes and oil changes are maintenance items you can easily do yourself. Go for it!!!

yes, it seems prices on used cars have gone up significantly in last 2-3 years. im not surprised, less and less people are able to afford new cars so used cars get more interest. i remember looking at fully loaded 2005 es330 for 10-11K 3 years ago in any case, for 2002 thats a lot of money today IMO.
It may be due to the area. Down here in Texas used cars aren't cheap. Also after cash for clucker used car have gone up a bit.

We're most likely going to pick it up next week if its still there. Thing is we are trying to find the best way to take care of the SO's current car (BMW 528i). Girl next door said she might want it for $3k, it has issues and because dealer will give us pretty much nothing for it.
