Please help...cv joints/half shat
Does anyone know much about how to remove and an half shaft for 1999 ES300? thank you in adcvance...https://www.clublexus.com/forums/ima...lies/Peace.gif
I have a '93. not sure how similar they are. Mine has 6 allen head/internal hex type bolts holding shaft to inner stub. Inner stub doesn't need to be removed as far as I can tell.
remove tire, unfasten tie rod. If you use a pickle fork, you risk tearing the tie rod boot. I use the balljoint separator tool where you slide it in place, then tighten a long bolt on the tool that pops it apart. Tool costs $20 or less at harbor freight. never damage the rubber boot with this one, so one clean use (as in not damaging rubber boot) saves you cost of the tool.
Remove the large axle nut....I think it's 27mm socket. And impact really helps remove.
remove 6 allen head bolts from shaft/inner stub connection. roll the axle to line up each of these bolts for easier removal. you'll find a spot where you can get the tool to line up easier, and just roll the axle each time for each of those 6 bolts to be taken off at the same easy tool access point.
I've seen some guys just undo the bottom balljoint bolt then swing the whole knuckle/hub away with brakes still attached. I usally don't touch that balljoint. I remove the brake caliper & brakes, undo the 2 bolts holding the bottom of the strut to the knockle, and then swing the knuckle/hub out of the way. now you should have room to pull axle out.
BUT if you remove the balljoint to get knuckle to pull away, it would be preferrable. That way you don't have to remove brakes, and better yet, will save you having to get wheel alignment. Any time you touch those 2 strut mounting bolts, you affect the camber or castor and should get an alignment afterwards.
I always find the race/cage/ball bearings fall out when I pull this apart.Hopefully your replacement axle is niceley assembled and you don't have to line up *****/cage/race, but they do tend to fall apart. Not sure if anyone ever removes the inner stub and tries to put this in as a whole unit. Driver side would probably be easier to attempt as one solid unit, than the passenger side.

I ordered a replacement axle and it did not come with an inner stub. the *****/cage fell out. there is a special way to line the *****/cage & race. If axle doesn't come with instructions, i have a pdf file I could send you. this is on re-assembly.
