I went to pickapart to grab a couple of cv axles for my 1993 ES 300. I took out driver side and unfastened all 6 of the allen head/internal hex head bolts. when I pulled out axle, the ball bearings fell out, and the cage. then I pried out the inner stub. seems like there was no reason for me to remove the 6 allen bolts and I could have re&re 'ed as a complete assembly with the inner stub still attached.

so when I went to do passenger side I pulled off the steering knuckle by undoing the 2 bolts on the strut, and then removed the tie rod. poof, the outer was free quickly. I never touched the 6 allen bolts. this axle won't pop out of tranny as easily. It seems to have an intermediate shaft going through a mount, and that connects to the CV shaft on one end, and goes into tranny on other end. Is there a way to pull this out as a solid/single unit, or do I have to remove those 6 allen bolts and leave the longer intermediate shaft in the tranny?

Have no idea why anyone would install used axles, given the price of new ones. But anyway, to remove the carrier bearing on the right side of the car usually requires some serious force, you are lucky that your car has axles that can be separated. It makes the job much easier.

To keep the ball bearings from falling out, you need to keep the outer axle extended while removing it.

haha, great point and I'd normally say the same thing (about messing around with a used axle). I was at pickapart already, and this is a car i am fixing to sell, so I figured this would work and save me $30.

I tried pulling on it hard, no luck. also tried banging the inner cv with a long bar from inside the mount, driving it outward. gave up. after wasting my time, i wondered what you printed even more!! and now that I seem to have it mostly done, I felt stubborn to finish the job . hard to argue that I should just give up.

our only local cv axle repair guy (who no longer does this because the axles are cheaper than he can repair them) said when I pull off the 6 allen bolts, I should be able to remove axle without taking apart knuckle. I assume slide off inner, then pull the outer stub off the spindle/knuckle. it just doesn't look like there is enough room to do that.
