1996 rear parking brake adjustment

Are these supposed to be self adjusting? I installed a set of new parking brake shoes on our 96es300.

They are not self adjusting. You turn the adjuster until the shoes lock onto the drum, then back it off a few clicks and make sure the disc rotates freely.

Is downwards to tighten the park brake??
