Im going to be ordering front brake pads for my es300. Do i need anything else besides the pads, like new shims or the pin ?

check what they come with. Websites like www.rockauto.com state if its pads only, or shims.

Then again, i've seen a few toyota parts places sell shims separately. You can re-use the old shims... clean them up with a wirebrush and anti-seize where the pad sits in.

I believe the OEM pads come with new shims. I did my front ones this past summer. What is your experience like with brakes?

Brakes pads are suppose to come with shims...Unless you are buying a crap brand. OEM and Akebono always comes with shims. Dont forget to lube those caliper pins...

Before I ordered them I called my local lexus dealer just to see how much they were and he said the shims come in a separate kit for $44. Just use standard grease for the caliper pins ?

There is a specific lube for brake caliper pins. Don't use generic grease.

Received the brake pads and an oil filter from lexuspartsnow. Packaged very poorly. The brake pad box and the filter were just thrown into a bigger box. When I opened the box the pads were out of the box rattling around and the box for the filter looked like they picked it out of the garbage (filter did have plastic seal). The pads did NOT come with shims, just the pads. Guess I will reuse the old shims.

You know I looked up my receipt from last summer and it turns out that I bought the shims separately for $28. The pads were $37.

It's gotta hurt pedaling backwards, no?

Akebono is the first one i hear of that comes with them. The rockauto catalogue specifies what each comes with. Almost all don't come with them, Hawk? same thing, and i'd say those are far better than akebono which, to my knowledge is just a pepboys 'regular' item [since i see it on commercials, otherwise pardon my canadian ignorance]

Good to know! I'll go to Sewell if I need anything in that case.
