If you get a hold of a 4PDT switch (as little as $2 from EBAY, shipping included) and a half of match-box sized plastic container to house this switch, the only wires that exit this match-box will be a foot long ethernet cable and one foot long ear-phone wire with male plug at end. Any scrap foot long ethernet cable can be used because it's 8 wires' are most definitely thick enough to conduct same small signal that conducts through the ear-phone wire. Eight speaker wires to conduct audio signal is a huge over-kill! You can use my schematic to splice into the RED/WHITE/RED/GREEN wires AND, you can do this all on the back of the CD changer in the glove compartment. The schematic to wire inside the match-box as well as splicing into four audio signal wires are shown in my schematics, also. I will be doing this soon and I will tell you how it worked.

There really isn't much to get wrong here since all of the schematics are provided for you! I'd definitely go for it as long as you know how to splice wires then you can do it. But I would stay away from match boxes and ethernet cables.... I doubt lexus would ever incorporate match boxes in their cars I tried to make this as oem looking as possible, I suggest you do the same. Just spend the extra 20$ and do it right. Feel free to pm me with any questions, I'll help guide you through it if needed!

Hate to bump an old thread, but I am curious to see if anyone else has done this since I posted it? And if so where did you locate your aux input and switch?

Very good write-up, guys.
I have 1997 ES300 with 260k miles on it. The audio unit's LCD is shot but the sound is still great. I will try this soon and post the result.
Thank you for the handy info and pic / diagrams.

Thank you for this great UPGRADE to my 99 ES300. I have slightly improved the install by avoiding the extra switch.
I used SJ-3506-SMT jack from DigiKey which has an isolated switch. So when I hit CD button and plug in the headphone jack, the switch activates the relays. The link for this jack is:

I also never liked the giant relays so instead used ORWH-SH-112D relays from DigiKey.

Only caveat is that you must solder everything....

This is a great mod. I personally paid to have my deck modified, very discrete switch on the front and the input is in the back, runs to my iPod Nano in the ashtray you'd never know it is there.
Just wanted to say if you have the Nakamichi you can't do this mod. While the wires are there to support the base Pioneer system, the changer has a digital cable that sends the audio signal to the deck which does the D/A conversion. Don't want anyone to go nuts trying to troubleshoot this with the Nak ;-)

I know that this is an older thread, but I just recently found it and decided to get it done this weekend. I followed the write-up that es30000000 did to a T and everything went fine. I was able to pull 12V power from the cig lighter. The relays all power on when the key is switched on. However, I only get a tiny amount of volume even when the stereo is turned to max I check and re-checked all my connections several times and see nothing wrong. If anyone has any suggestions for me, I would greatly appreciate it.
